Wearing a wig was once something that many women kept a secret. While there are still some women that prefer to be discreet about it, many (including celebrities) have no shame in admitting, "It's a wig girl!".

One of the benefits of wearing wigs is variety. If you're someone that likes to go back and forth between textures or colors, then wigs are an excellent choice for you. It gives you the opportunity to be a blonde with a sleek bob for dinner on Friday night, a brunette with long wavy hair for the movies on Saturday, and a curly-haired redhead for Sunday brunch.

If you're not sure about taking the plunge on a new color or getting that cut, then a wig is great for a test run.

Wigs are also a good option for someone that loves a particular style (like a blowout or defined curls) but doesn't have the time to go to a salon or to create the form themselves.

You're an individual, and your wig should be too. If you decide to start wearing wigs, there are a few options to make sure that it's personalized.

If you purchase a wig already constructed consider having your stylist style it for you. Human wigs like those offered by Indique  can be cut and colored to your liking. It's advised that you seek a licensed stylist to do this to prevent damage, and confirm with your stylist that they are comfortable with styling wigs as all stylist are not.

If you want something a bit more personalized, some stylists can construct wigs according to your requests. A consultation with your stylist or wig maker can establish what type of look you're going for. This method will help you achieve the exact look that you want and give you a perfect fit.

Wig Life

While wearing wigs can be very convenient, it doesn't mean that you don't have to put in the work.

It is recommended that you shampoo your wig as needed. At least once a month, but more frequently if you apply a lot of styling products. It is suggested that you use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to maintain the integrity of your wig. If you are unsure of how to correctly wash your wig, many hair salons offer the service.

Proper care is key to extending the life of your wig.

Wearing a wig doesn't have to mean that you look like an extra in a school play. It's a matter of making the right selection, making any necessary adjustments, and giving it TLC as needed.
